As winter throws it's final punch, I'm feeling the need for warmth in my living room. When we moved in, Jahred and I talked about a fireplace. "Should we put it here? Or there?" Last week, using some up-cycled wood from the "Restore - Habitat for Humanity Retail Store" we created a portable mantle to test-drive such a feature.
So far, so good. I'm actually liking the faux fire, and it's flexibility/portability. I'm picturing a large mirror and perhaps a stack of vintage books inside. Just thought I'd share what $7 did for my winter chill.

We're back up north with a bit of a tan, a few more freckles and three big smiles. We had such a fun week in the sun and most importantly, one magical day at Disney World. Here are a few highlights. Nana, Jahred and Axel pose in front of the castle. This little man has no idea what's coming! First things first, a very serious "Buzz Lightyear" space ride. Axel took to the laser shooter quite naturally, helping defeat evil in the galaxy. He loved meeting the characters! If I had known this would be his highlight, I would have been more prepared with an autograph book. Silly mommy, I thought he would be all about the rides?! Front row, curb-side for the parade, we finally tracked down a pair of ears and Axel was all smiles (and squints). This was his most favorite part of the day. Randomly-squirting Tiki Towers held his attention for the better part of the afternoon. With extra clothes in tow, we let him get SOAKED! He was in heaven! Two days later, still in Florida, my non-traditional Axel took a non-traditional Birthday Photo. Since he captured his own portrait on his first day of school, he thought he should do the same for his 4th Birthday ("My actual Birthday." - as he told everyone he could that night.) Instead of posing for a candid shot himself, he took this of us, from the comfort of his stroller. As you can see, we had to adjust to where his lens was pointing to avoid a belly-botton shot, but all-in-all his photography is improving.
Happy Valentines Day.
Love, Axel PS - By the time you read this, I'll be on my way to Florida. Yippee! ![]() When you're born in the summer, you never really get to celebrate your birthday in school. Teachers make an attempt to recognize the "half-birthday," but everyone knows it's not the same thing. Fortunately for Axel, unlike his mother, he has a birthday not only during the school year, but near Valentines Day. This year he is turning 4. It's hard to believe. I decided to take his "school birthday" into my own hands today and sew up a couture project for him and his classmates. At first it seemed to be a bigger bite than I could chew, but last night around bedtime I finished the last of the 18 bears needed for an ultra-stuffing-filled birthday-bear bash. The preschoolers were so darling, if only I could have taken action shots. Fifteen kids and many pounds of stuffing didn't allow me much time with behind the lens, but luckily I snapped a few pictures of the bears (pre-stuff) and the accessories I made just especially for Axel's occasion. Empty bears on a line. Felt hearts to tuck inside. Flowers for the feminine. Made with a bit of felt and hot glue. Bow-ties for the boys. Over the next couple of weeks there will be much more birthday for my little prince, today was only the kickoff! Stay tuned!
