I thought the most hazardous part of my job was sewing through my finger. That has yet to happen, however while biking your (see how I'm placing blame generally...a mean thing to do...blame it on post traumatic stress) packages to the post office today I was hit by a car! Yes, hit by a car on my bicycle!!
I was hit right in the driveway of the post office, I spot I know to be difficult to pull out as a car. Drivers are often looking left towards the mailbox and then when a break in traffic occurs they jump on the gas. I saw this lady mailing her envelopes (perhaps her Christmas cards) and when she looked to her right, checking for traffic, I questioned whether she saw me, but she then stopped. By her stopping I was assured that she saw me...in BRIGHT YELLOW PANTS no less...and I proceeded to go around the front of her car. At that point she really gave it some power and my brand new Dansko was on her hood. It happened just like that. Luck was with me however that I saw it coming and she didn't pin my leg against my bike. If I wouldn't have stepped on her hood I would have tipped over into oncoming traffic and been in a halo for the next 6 months (if that). Did I get her plate number as my bike nearly tore it off, leaving it dragging as she pulled away? No. I'm not that quick. I did get quite the reception from the post office ladies who saw it all happen however. Funny thing is that I boycotted that post office for almost a year because one of the workers was such a terror that I couldn't even look at her without losing all sense of Holiday spirit. Doubt they'll be giving me crap now. Maybe I could even sue them for lack of "stop sign" or perhaps for not mowing their weeds and thus blocking the view for drivers. Naw...I'm just happy I didn't have a kid behind me (which I often do) and that perhaps my size 39 left a sizable reminder on her hood to watch out for bikers. Now you all get to see my new shoes again, documenting my only injury...an ankle scratch from my pedal on the leg that wasn't all "karate style" on her vehicle. Also, you can see the chunk missing from my rear (Tyler help me out with this part name) "wheel-holder-onner." Well folks. Etsy prices may be on the rise. I'm now feeling the need for "hazard insurance" or at least "long term care insurance."
